Garden update June 27th 2018

Summer is officially here and the garden is well on its way. Today we are going to take you on a quick (ish) tour of how things are progressing in the garden. In the next few days we will hi-light each section and go more in depth in regards to varieties. This is going to be a picture heavy post so sit back and enjoy.

The island garden as you may recall is a first for us this year. In here we have planted (amongst the weeds) watermelon 🍉 white pumpkin 🎃, butter nut squash and spaghetti squash. The soil is a bit hard and lacking in nutrients so growing isn't progressing as quick as we would have hoped. However, nothing has died yet so there's hope!  We also have two crabapple trees, two rhubarb plants and asparagus in this section. The asparagus had a rough year and the crabapple trees never bloomed. It has been a strange growing year for sure.

Let move onto what we call the main garden. This garden is just over 3000 sq ft and contains the majority of our crop. Chives, rhubarb, horseradish and raspberries make up the perennial section. This year this section is also home to our 4 year olds surprise garden. She planted this along with grandma using the t and t seeds kids pack.

Section 2 is where our onions are and we must say they are loving it. It's true what they say about location, location, location!

Section 3 contains our newly hilled potatoes and spinach.

Section 4 is all about beans and peas. One of the kids favourite sections for sure.

Section 5 has our peppers and tomatoes. The tomatoes took a real beating from a few nasty wind storms, but they might just be coming around.

Section 6 is a little slow. It contains carrots, lettuce, leeks and beets.

The back garden is located at the rear of our property (no way,..lol) it is quite slow this year too and we have had to replant certain veggies two or three times. 2018 is also a horrible year for flea beetles and our garden has not been immune to them. Nonetheless plants are quite resistant and we do have some life.
Back here are cabbages, kale, bok choy, cauliflower, broccoli, beets, spinach, snap peas, asparagus beans, radishes, cucumbers and zucchini.

We hope you enjoyed the tour of our garden this week.
