Garden update July 26th

We apologize for the lack of posts. Technology has not been our friend lately and you can only yell at objects for so long before you realize you are losing the battle. The good news is the garden survived the hail and just about everything made it past the day 10 make it or break it deadline.  Our onions, lettuce, beets and carrots were greatly diminished. We have tried to resow a few of each, but time is not on our side here in Saskatchewan. The pictures below shows our 10 remaining carrots on the left. Spotty lettuce in the middle and equally spotty beets The other sad news is that the darn birds ate our cherries and saskatoons! We were able to get enough cherries for jam. Unfortunately a swarm of cedar waxwings devoured our saskatoon bush. despite numerous attempts by very sad children yelling at them they were not deterred at all and ate everything. Garden after the storm

If if you have been following us on Facebook and instagram you will know that we had a huge hail storm here on Saturday. It was followed by another shorter hail storm with larger hail and stronger winds. All the books and online info we read said not to freak out too much. That after day 5 we would reallly see the damage and by day 10 anything not starting to produce again likely would not.  We are at day 5 today and there is good news and bad news. Good news is that it appears the good majority of the garden should bounce back. Plants that were too damaged are dead and leaves that quickly turned brown were pruned as soon as we could. Another benefit to the damaged garden has been the large amounts of rain we have had the the past few days. This is suppose to help heal the plants and it is much easier to have Mother Nature take care of the watering for us. The bad news is yields will be down for sure and that we are not sure if most of the cabbage, cauliflower or broccoli ...
